So says the vatican:

Quote:
VATICAN CITY - The Vatican issued its most explicit decree so far against the ordination of female priests on Thursday, punishing them and the bishops who try to ordain them with automatic excommunication.

The decree was written by the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and published in the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, giving it immediate effect.

A Vatican spokesman said the decree made the church's existing ban on female priests more explicit by clarifying that excommunication would follow all such ordinations. Excommunication forbids those affected from receiving the sacraments or sharing in acts of public worship.

Rev. Tom Reese, a senior fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University, said he thought the decree was meant to send a warning to the growing number of Catholics who favor admitting women to the priesthood.

"I think the reason they're doing this is that they've realized there is more and more support among Catholics for ordaining women, and they want to make clear that this is a no-no," Reese said. The church said it cannot change the rules banning women from the priesthood because Christ chose only men as his apostles. Church law states that only a baptized male can be made a priest.

Proponents of women's ordination said Christ was only acting according to the social norms of his time.

They cite the letters of Saint Paul, some of the earliest texts of Christianity, to show that women played important roles in the early church.

That's right, excommunication. Most CRIMINALS don't get excommunicated, but apparently if a girl is made into a priest, well, that's it, no more Catholicism for you.

So, business as usual in the Catholic Church.

(I find it kind of funny that female priest proponents reference Paul's letters, even though Paul was quite the misogynist)

Bah. Christ selected numerous women as his 'messengers' at various point--they just never got dubbed "Apostles" in the translations of the translations of the stories written by, oddly enough, the male Apostles (or their successors, more often than not).

Dude, when there's a contradiction between the King James Version and the original Hebrew, that's when you know the original Hebrew is WRONG.

Hey, at least the KJV has some poetry to it. True story:

I was attending a Neil Gaiman reading for American Gods. (Side-note: Neil Gaiman's voice can cure migraines that have proven impervious to medical science.) Before the reading, he was telling about traveling across America for inspiration for the book. (Side-note 2: In the book, he talks about signs at the border of small Midwestern towns boasting something like, "National Wrestling Championship, 3rd Place, 1987". This is totally accurate.)

So he's talking about Vegas. First he talks about walking around in the summer in Vegas, which is apparently quite difficult--if you leave a building wearing, or even carrying, a jacket you end up sweltering, but if you walk into a hotel lobby with the A/C cranked to "Chilled Martini", you end up freezing without a coat. But then he goes on to relate a brief anecdote:

He was staying at a hotel that was in the process of shutting down; thus, as time went on, there were fewer and fewer people in it, until it started to get a bit eerie. And he's doing the notes for the chapter-quotes for the book (which was otherwise finished by this point), and gets to the Queen of Sheba chapter, and figures the Song of Solomon is just what he's looking for. And hey, he's in a hotel in America, so he digs out the Gideon Bible and flips through it. (Side-note 3: I have no third side-note for this story, but the Comedic Rule of 3 demands it, so here it is.) Unfortunately, the page with the quote he wants is misprinted and all askew. So he calls down to the front desk and asks if they can send him up another one.

A few minutes later, there's a knock at the door, and when he opens it, there's the night clerk, the night manager, and someone else standing there; the clerk has the Bible in his hands like he's holding it up for a reading of the Gospel. All three men are staring at him with something akin to religious awe. "In all the years we've been here, no one has ever asked for a Bible." He thanks them for their service, and takes the book, and they go on their way. Sadly, it's not a KJV, and thus lacks the poetic phrasing that he wanted for the quote! However, he couldn't bring himself to call back down and disillusion the poor man at the desk.

The bible has been translated so many times that there does not exist an accurate edition.

Well, it had to have been well before it was published. Maybe online Bibles didn't exist then.

I think perhaps you fail to understand excommunication. Most criminals aren't formally excommunicated, but yes, they are excommunicated by virtue of their sin. In either case the remedy should be the same: go to confession.

I'm not saying I agree with this exactly, but it's kind of essential that the Church be consistent. I would prefer it to allow ordination of women, but if they're not going to do that then they also can't just ignore some mavericks ordaining women.

The Catholic Church has never used the KJV. Kthx. It was made by Protestants for Protestants. If you want a comparable Catholic version, then perhaps the Vulgate will do.

It was directed at Freemage's post, because I've heard people argue that if the NKJV and original Greek texts disagree on a point, the Greek version must be wrong. Neverminding that the Greek version was directly inspired by God himself. He needed some people to correct him a thousand years later.

Well, in some cases the Greek is a translation from Hebrew, and in any case there are often more than one Greek version, but yeah it's a little bit crazy. Of course, in the Catholic Church we uphold Church tradition as of equal authority to the Bible, so if a passage has been historically taken a certain way we can always use the Church tradition argument. :p

We may be wrong, but we'll be consistently wrong? Now I understand why a lot of politicians love church.

Wait, are you saying you can be de-excommunicated through confession?

That doesn't sound like the Catholic church *I* knew

I think he means confession before excommunication, not confession as a reversal. Still, sounds off to me.

Eh. It seems I messed it up a little bit. I looked at Catholic Encylopedia and it seems that if you're excommunicated, you're meant to receive a separate absolution from the excommunicating authority before receiving sacramental absolution. So it's a little more complicated, but my basic point still stands. That point is that excommunication is not meant to be a permanent thing, but is meant to bring the excommunicated to repent.

They have a special rite for excommunication which is given at the Pope's option, if memory serves.
