"If one nation understands another nation more so than that nation understands the other nation, then that nation may be manipulated by that nation."

(So if China understands how the USA works more so than the USA understands China, China manipulates the USA.)

Taking it further...

"If another person understands you more so than you understand yourself, you could be manipulated."

My question is, do you agree with both or either of these statements and if so, why?

(This was brought up in my philosophy class and I thought it'd be something interesting to discuss.)

I don't know whether it applies to bodies of governments, but it's certainly true that people are manipulated in that way all the time. The whole psychic industry is based on people uneducated about their body language and such giving out signals that they don't realize.

Well, it's true that you can be. If someone understands how something works, then they can manipulate that thing.

I don't know if that applies to countries, they might be too complicated, but it may apply to the leaders of said countries.

But, the real question is, if someone's going to bother to understand you at more than a superficial level, why would they manipulate you?

The one thing that irks me, though, is when the statement claims that "a person understands you more so than you understand yourself". How can someone know you more than you know yourself? Everyone's unique and different. To me, being manipulated is usually just taking advantage of someone's weak qualities that they've luckily spotted firsthand. Not about how much you know about someone OR yourself.

I agree about the government/nation thing, though. That may be one strength but it's not a major one nor the only one.

I would argue that it's just a tactic/strategy learned to just BS stuff that sounds realistic than knowing something about that person through first impressions.

Hrm, I don't think there's really a good answer for that. All that it boils down to is mental dysfunction. To them it's almost fun, like a game.
